Not really into the witchcraft thing so steared clear, but I do appreciate how it got kids into reading again.

Meh. I'm Catholic, but I read them. I think that as long as you don't believe in it it doesn't really matter. And even though I'm reading it, it doesn't mean that I believe it.
Anyway, I started reading them when Goblet of Fire came out, before the Sorcerer's Stone movie started in theaters. Before I read them, I thought that they were really lame. But now, I'm pretty much obsessed with them.
I agree. They have gotten tons darker, but even though both of my favorite characters died in the last two books, I still love the sixth one the most.

The books are really well-written (except for #2, which I didn't like, my opinion, though), but not always suitable for kids. I cried at the end of book 4, 5 and 6 (silly me ) and probably wouldn't have coped with all those characters dying had I been a child or young teenager. My mum never forbade me to read any books (I had read all the children's books in the local library by the age of 10, so I went on with the "adult books"), dunno if it did me any harm... I don't get this religious controversy. Can't people distinguish fiction from reality? Do they really bar their children from reading Harry Potter for RELIGIOUS reasons? Do they also ban their children from reading fairy tales, saying "There's only one speaking animal in the bible, the satanic snake, therefore ALL speaking animals must be devilish!" Kids aren't dumb. Only if their parents educate them to be so.

Yeah. The second was probably my least favorite, and even though I thought it was my favorite at the time I don't really like book five. Harry was just too depressed and moody in that book. Yeah, he's a teenager and he watched the person in book 4 die, but he just annoyed me in that one.
I bawled at the end of book six to the point where I actually had a cold for about a week.

I predicted who would die in 5&6...and I didn't like the second book either. And in book 5 Harry was definitely too moody, I didn't realize he had turned into a PMSing teenage girl...
